Twin Towers Go Global is proud to announce its participation in the first annual International Day Without English. A spokesman at the New York City Headquarters declared the event “a perfect opportunity for Twin Towers across the globe to display solidarity with their local constituencies, as well as the international community.” The spokesman also noted the role of TTGG resident artist Pedro Lasch in creating the event, stating that the organization was pleased to show support for Lasch’s endeavors.

The International Day Without English falls on December 18, which is also the United Nations-designated International Arabic Day and International Migrants Day. Lasch is producing the event in conjunction with a global call sent out by sponsoring organizations Creative Time, the Queens Museum of Art, and Tania Bruguera’s Immigrant Movement International. Individuals are invited to participate simply by speaking any language other than English on this day, and to spread the message via social media, email, discussions, and blog posts, using any of the translations provided on the website. If participants are familiar with any language not represented on this list, the organizers would greatly appreciate their translations of the phrase “International Day Without English.” Individuals to whom English is the only language available may participate by remaining silent and avoiding the written word for the day, using the time for reflection. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences of the International Day Without English with the organizers, which will be published with permission on the website.

To send translations, ask questions, give feedback, or share experiences, contact Pedro Lasch or Jessye McDowell at daywithoutenglish(at)experimentalcommunities.net. Allparticipating organizations, translators, and individuals will be listed on the project website.

Like all other projects in the AND AND AND series, these reports are part of dOCUMENTA(13).

The Second Report is now up on the dOCUMENTA(13) website:

Issued yesterday in Kassel, Germany, the current report focuses on the TTGG’s recent “Open Call”, a competition where people were invited to imagine the Twin Towers rebuilt around the world. Almost sixty proposals were submitted between July 31 and September 2, 2011. Five winners were selected by a specialized jury, and another five through an international public vote. The ten finalists were announced in private at the opening reception of Pedro Lasch’s ‘Phantom Limbs’ exhibition in New York (Stephan Stoyanov Gallery, September 7 – October 9, 2011). The following winners (listed alphabetically) are now made public through the international announcement of dOCUMENTA(13):
1. Al-Ahram Weekly’s Ossama for Twin Towers Fallujah and Telafar
2. Joe Compean for Twin Towers Marfa, Texas
3. Margaret Donovan for Twin Towers Athens, Greece
4. Bosch Fawstin for Twin Towers Mecca, Saudi Arabia
5. Joyce Green for Two Towers & a Levee, New Orleans
6. Mirwais Hotak for Twin Buddhas Return to Afghanistan
7. Silvia Maglioni & Graeme Thomson for Twin Towers at Mountain of Kobeshugel
8. Kyong Park for Twin Towers on Bin Laden Secret Ocean Burial Site
9. Roman Reyna for Twin Towers Dallas
10. Gareth Roberts for Serenity, Twin Towers on Tropical Island
Additional special mentions went to Amy White, Sang-Dong Kim, and Orlando Bosch Avila Jr. for a tie in the 11th place.

All of these proposals are featured with images and other details in the ten page PDF online publication available through the link below:
9/11, Call for Censorship, Last Day of Voting, and Winners Announced Tomorrow, Wednesday September 7th at Pedro Lasch’s Stephan Stoyanov Gallery Exhibition in New York City
—————————-

September 6th (until 11:59pm) is the last day for people to vote for their favorite submission for the Twin Towers Go Global 10th anniversary open call – a competition where people sent in plans to rebuild the Twin Towers around the world.

While most votes and correspondence we have received regarding the Twin Towers Go Global Open Call have been supportive, we want to address here the messages we have received asking us to censor specific entries immediately. Most of these requests are regarding two specific submissions. One, posted by Sue Horia and entitled ‘Al-Ahram Weekly’s ‘Ossama’ – Twin Towers Fallujah and Telafar’ is included here:

The other, entitled ‘Towering Over Islam’ is by cartoonist Bosch Fawstin, and is also included below:

http://www.twintowersgoglobal.org/wtc/2011/09/bosch-fawstin-towering-over-islam-rebuild-twin-towers-in-mecca/

We are aware that the topic of 9/11/2011, and any imagery regarding the Twin Towers will be very sensitive material, especially as we come near the 10th anniversary of this terrible tragedy. We have tried to balance a sensitive approach with a commitment to the democratic spirit of debate and representation across social and political spectrum, within and outside of the U.S. You may show your support or opposition to these ideas by voting, but we cannot self-censor any submission at this point, unless the jury reaches a unanimous decision to do so.

The ten winners, five chosen by popular vote and the other five by our special jury, will be announced at the opening reception for Pedro Lasch’s Stephan Stoyanov Gallery (29 Orchard Street, New York, NY) exhibition tomorrow, Wednesday September 7th, 6-9pm. Finalists will also be announced in the 2nd Anniversary Report produced by Lasch & TTGG for the AND AND AND platform of the international exhibition Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany.
